Dating the Pebble Hill Baseball Team Film Footage
Margaret Compton, Media Archivist of the Walter J. Brown Media Archives & Peabody Awards Collection at the University of Georgia Libraries, will present a program based upon her research into what is the earliest known film in Georgia of a baseball game played by African Americans.
The 28 mm home movie, part of the Pebble Hill Plantation film collection, was donated to the UGA Libraries’ Walter J. Brown Media Archives in 2012. It is believed to be the only existing moving image of a baseball game between teams made up of African-American employees on Southern hunting plantations. This home movie, around 1919, depicts the Pebble Hill Plantation team playing the opposing team from Chinquapin Plantation, also located near Thomasville, GA.
Join us to learn more about Ms. Compton’s fascinating research on this extraordinary piece of baseball history.
